Just back from our Iclandic-Volcano-Extended holiday and had to login to say a Huge thanks to TD for a fantastic show in a fabulous location. What a totally awesome show. Pity it wasn't filmed. Lets hope it gets a CD release at some point.

Got some photos on one of my cameras which I must download at some point. It's not a great camera but the photos look OK-ish.

Had to laugh on the way back to Victoria Station. I heard a fan say "I thought they'd play more of their early stuff". Clearly Ziet, Phaedra, Rubycon, Stratosfear, Force Majeure, Exit, Logos, Poland, etc, etc, not enough for some people. :D

Chris,
They forgot the title of the tour : Zeitgeist ~ Timeghost
Kind of : back to the future but then reverse :
Forward to the past.

Imo the tour reflects compositions during past 40 years of TD.
And if you want more from the past, the gig can long 24hr, and still it is not enough. :D

jd_tdfan80 wrote:Hi to all who were at the TD gig in RAH.

Felt compelled to join the forum after witnessing a fantastic show. We upgraded to Loggia Box and ordered Champange, excellent!!!!!!

First time I have seen TD since Dublin 1980. My wife, Bernie, was also with me on both ocassions.

The idea of the fan meet at the Builders Arms was a fantastic idea, meeting people from LA, Florida, Toronto, Europe, UK and Ireland. We both really enjoyed. It is nice to know there is a worldwide band of TD followers who have appreaciated TD music for so long.

The band meet after the show was an unexpected highlight and one I will always cherish. What a pleasure it was to meet Edgar for the first time. Both Iris and Linda were wonderful.

Many thanks to Conrad and "Billy the Fish"(sorry Stephen) for everything. It was great meeting you guys. We also enjoyed the few drinks in Courtfilelds along with Jacob on the 31st.

Conrad, regards to Nollaig. I will be in touch re Tangerine Leaves.
Regards to Colin, Gerry and David, nice meeting you all as we walked to RAH.

Cheers, John & Bernie(Dublin)
Hi John,

Great to meet you in London! John recognised me on the night before the concert in the pub down the road from the Blackbird, from TD forum pics and reading TD fan pages! It's always really cool to meet fellow Irish TD enthusiasts (since we are somewhat moderate in number!!).

Hope we can meet up soon in Dublin perhaps - you'll have to meet Geoff 'Taximan' Keogh. I think you will both get on!

A big hello to Bernie!

More soon,

Conrad

Cheers Conrad,

Just listening to Enocre and Ambient Highways Vol 1... Excellent.
Printed some nice photos of band neet. Iris is amzin.
Will be in touch soon.

A few memories from the Royal Albert Hall show.

After a full night at work, we drive to Gatwick.

I dropped my wife and the boys at the Holiday Inn mid-afternoon. Had a quick steak sandwich on room service and left the car-keys with the hotel. Jumped on the hotel bus to Gatwick North Terminal, made my way to the airport station and got a ticket for the Gatwick Express.

The train ride in to London started in bright sunshine but as I got closer to the capital it’s obvious that we were going in under a massive storm cloud. As the train pulled into Victoria station my suspicions were confirmed and the heavens opened.

I bought an umbrella from Tie Rack and sheltered in a massive office-block entrance way for about 15 minutes somewhere on Grosvenor Place. The rain was torrential, thunder booming around the local buildings and blinding lightening flashes going off every few seconds. Very spectacular and dark thoughts of The Forum gig filled my head.

Fortunately the storm was over fairly quickly so I decided to make another attempt to get to the RAH. Continued up Grosvenor Place and then jumped puddles and streams all the way along Hyde Park till I encountered The Albert Memorial. Took some pictures and then crossed the road to the Hall.

I made my way to the entrance door (number 11), it was still about 45 minutes before the start of the show, and was amazed to be told by the doorman that, if I made my way round to door 1, I could get in. Went round to door 1 and was let in behind a young girl carrying a cello-case on her back (nope the penny didn’t drop).

Made my way to the bar and downed a pint of Speckled Hen. Asked an usher if there was a merch stand and he said try door 6. Have to say everyone one working for the RAH was very polite, made a huge change from the usual security.

Got to door 6 and could see the merch stand behind a glass door. I wait patiently with a dozen others for a few minutes. An usher opens the door and says “….everyone outside will hate you lot”. I get near the front of the merch stand and wait patiently to be served. Some others try to push in front but fortunately the guy behind the counter has clocked me and serves me before them.

I buy a t-shirt, a poster and the tour CD. I exit sharply as the crush is getting unbearable.

I make my way to my seat and enter the Hall. My jaw hits the ground. It’s beautiful. So full of atmosphere that you can sit on it.

I take my seat and shortly the lights dim. Four cellists take the stage in Venetian masks. I exclaim “No?” the Frenchman next to me exclaims “Non?” They start to play Birth of Liquid Pleiades. After a few seconds I notice that TQ is on stage, adding synth lines. It’s a beautiful sound, I just want it to go on and on but all too soon it’s over.

As they finish Linda is escorted on stage by a roadie. She’s wearing a white dress lit from inside by fairy lights. The roadie makes her comfortable at a grand piano and she starts to play a lovely piano piece. Her playing is exceptional, I’m blown away.

Then Edgar slowly ambles across the stage. Pulls back Linda’s hair and kisses her neck. A simple expression of the affection most of the audience must have been feeling for her playing. He then makes his way to the other end of the piano.

All of a sudden there’s an almighty clatter and out of the corner of my eye I see Edgar throw something into the piano (apparently some sort of whip). It’s a jarring moment but somehow apt. The message is clear - “Pay attention”. Shades of “Wake Up!” from the Logos tour.

The mighty machine that is TD starts up. A new track with a crunching beat. No…. hang on its Rubycon…. but not as you’ve heard it before.
The tracks keep coming. One classic after another. TD-nirvana.

Bernie is there and is playing a blinder. I’ve seen him a few times now and have always been very impressed but this time he’s taken another step forward. On occasions he’s playing the guitar with a Wii remote, other times a sander but it all sounds fabulous. As if that weren’t enough, every now and then, he produces his violin.

Iris is her usual happy smiling self and sporting a new hairdo. She’s bouncing around in the background through most of the show.

Eventually the set comes to a conclusion and TD stop for an intermission. I’m very grateful. Maybe a pint of Speckled Hen wasn’t such a good idea.

I return from the loo and sit waiting for the second set to start. A heckler starts up. Someone keen to get the second set underway. He’s hilarious.
Eventually TQ takes up the seat in front of the grand piano and starts to play Satie’s Gymnopedies. This goes down well with the French contingent to my right. TQ’s playing isn’t a display of technical ability but a master-class in subtlety and beauty.

TQ finishes his solo and the second set is underway. The music is more up to date, a selection of modern day classics. It’s over all too soon. TD leave the stage.

The first encore starts with a short vocal performance by Iris followed by Logos and One Night in Space. TD leave the stage again.

The second encore starts with Edgar taking up his guitar. He’s looking thin and gaunt. Any worries about his health are soon quashed by a stunning version of Hamlet. Best version I’ve heard him play. Bernie provides solo trade-offs.

The band then leads into Long Island Sunset. Not heard this played live since ….err ….1990. Linda astounds once again by playing soprano sax and flute to perfection. Great way to finish the show.

But it’s not over yet. We get a third encore. The Beatle’s Norwegian Wood. TQ sings and both Iris and Bernie add vocals during the chorus.
The house-lights go up. Fans start to filter out of the hall. Should I go to the after-show meet? I’m shattered but very happy. Got a flight to catch in a few short hours. I decide to make my way back to Victoria.

Nice write up Chris - thanks for sharing! I too was glad for the interval! I jumped out of the seats like a gazelle - I hardly touched the floor until I found the bog!

Thanks for these interesting written memories, Chris. :)
A funny thing : I was the Frenchman next to you ! I remember you exclaiming "No ?" at the beginning and then I exclaimed "Non ? Incroyable !" So it's nice to have "met you" (sort of).
And I agree : the Hall and the concert were amazing.
