Descent Into Madness

Post by TheXFactor »

So I'm poking around the internet earlier this evening and come across these two entries at Discogs:

http://www.discogs.com/Tangerine-Dream- ... ase/532532

http://www.discogs.com/Tangerine-Dream- ... ase/869498

This- in particular (from "Goozer")- stood out:

"The second track begins midway through "Mojave Plan", and ends after the second theme from "Logos Part B", here called "Descent Into Madness". All track titles are my 'impressions' of the theme except where a real title exists."

But a real title does exist: Logos Part B. Heard here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAgeAdx9_XQ also retitled with his "impressions".

The reason I was looking this up in the first place was because I had recalled- for no particular reason- a phone conversation I had years ago with someone (presumably this Goozer person) about a live TD recording he was making copies of (which apparently became LOGOTYPES). At one point, I specifically remember him saying "Well, I've retitled this section "Descent Into Madness" because I feel it better suits the music". And I thought then- as I still do after reading all this again- that renaming someone else's music is massively obnoxious. I mean, seriously? You feel you can better name something that someone else created?

So what does everyone else think? Obnoxious, megalomaniac, or a fan with way too much free time?

Hmmmmmmm...project much?

There were exactly four people (including myself) who were involved in the creation of 'Logotypes', and there were maybe four others with whom I ever discussed this over the phone after the fact. I have personally met all but three of those individuals, and had multiple conversations about other topics with all eight - which is to say that we all had a chance to get to know one another beyond mere words on a screen. All of the above individuals knew precisely why the indexed version of the CD-R had those titles given to the tracks. I suspect you are not one of the eight.

TD also has given other names to the sections that comprise Logos (and Quichotte/Pergamon, and Poland,) beyond 'Logos A, B, Red, Blue, Velvet, etc...,' and had those names been known, they would have been used at the time this was created. Try not to assume above your powers of reason next time, mmmmkay?

Well, as far as that goes I'm not too concerned about what someone else might think. But how can saying that only a band should title their own music (unless they specifically request it otherwise) be a bad thing?

Hmmmmmmm...hyper-defensive much?

Sure, TD has given other names to the sections of the music that THEY composed and performed. It doesn't matter why "the indexed version of the CD-R had those titles given to the tracks". My point is that you- and others apparently- felt the need (and the right) to rename them. Talk about making assumptions on things...

Trying to end your comment with a "clever" quip to draw attention away from the fact that you've done the equivalent of TD fanfic with a CDR doesn't really support your point either.

oops...I did make an assumption - that you weren't a troll. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to engage in this tedious tirade of yours. My bad.

Actually, I'm not. But- coincidentally- people who realize that they don't have a leg to stand on in terms of defending a point will often make that very accusation to try and draw attention away from themselves). A troll usually posts false, inflammatory, and often derogatory comments in order to get a heated posting debate going. I did nothing of the kind. I simply made an observation about something I thought was incredible egocentric- a fan renaming someone else's musical composition- and your response was that people you spoke with knew *why* it was retitled. That doesn't change the fact that you retitled someone else's work. Again, this is the equivalent of TD fanfic where the author inserts themself into the story and saves the day. Next you'll be telling me that you recorded a synth music solo album as well...
