I can see your point and it's a valid one. Clearly in the example you give above, the main creative process would be in the preparation, composing and sequencing, rather than the performance.

It's important to remember that it doesn't have to be a choice just between improvisation or pre-programming. Most Western music is composed and played manually, sometimes allowing space for improvisation (e.g. guitar solo). A good illustration of this style from TD is the 1977 North American Tour.
