Turn Of The Tides
Of all the Seattle Years releases I like this album most, it's full of great tunes and features some fantastic guitar solos as well as fine melodies. My favourites are "Firetongues", a mind blowing composition, and the stormy "Jungle Journey" (what a rhythm guitar!) that I wish would last for another 6 minutes. "Death Of A Nightingale" is a very emotional piece with a fine saxophone part by Linda Spa and the title track may be one of TD's most daring "fun tracks" with its unusual "poppy" drum beats and the (wordless) female vocals. And then there are two more complicated and longer tracks with "Twilight Brigade" and "Galley Slave's Horizon" (the former featuring some eerie Perica guitar parts, the latter more wodless vocal performances). I even love the original cover with its colourful wheel-like images featuring Edgar's "Coachman's Tales" as liner notes. Edgar should cultivate his writing skills (be it his autobiography or more CD notes), the story is highly metaphorical and full of great images that accompany the music very well.
The only track I don't care for is "Midwinter Night", this one is a bit too cheesy for my tastes. And the "Pictures At An Exhibition" version is nothing more than an atmospheric intro that could have been left off the album in my opinion. But these minor complaints don't distract too much from this album's quality. I rate this 8 / 10 and I think it's much better than its reputation among some fans seems to suggest. Too bad this quartet line-up (Edgar & Jerome Froese, Linda Spa & Zlatko Perica) didn't last longer.
My copy of this album doesn't feature "Story Of The Brave", but that's no problem as this one's included on "Dream Encores" as well.
