TD's equipment

Post by 24db »

Is it worth having a thread discussing TD's equipment over the years?

I can post a few lists for some tours 'if' there's any interest in discussing it

It's always interesting reading, although I confess to being lost when it comes to the more technical areas.

I could certainly learn a lot... I already know a bit, and quite like recognising my favourite PPG sounds when I can... some of these synths almost have their own personalities :D

I don't know much about the technical definitions, but I sure do enjoy looking on the enourmous machinery. It makes me drool.

Anyone know what that softsynth was that Edgar was using at the tempodrom concert? - looks like it was the software version of something quite old by the looks of his Monitor: Lots of dials and patchleads and stuff.

Arturia MMV Moog modular, as well as a DX7 software synth, and there might have even been a CS80 one, although I doubt whether more than the DX was being used

I think TD more or less kept PPG going and some of it was custom built. The PPG 2.V VSTi is a fab plugin and shows what an incredible accomplishment the 2.3 was for it's time. The vocally sounds on Kiew Mission are PPG I think.

I think the reason the album is so good for me is that it has just the right mix of analogue and digital - only one dreaded DX7. The sequencing isn't too regimented (no Cubase yet). There's some elements of improvisation still and the pieces are a fair length with plenty of development.

Welcome to the forum UHF. Encore is my favourite album and Poland, I love nearly as much.

I wonder if TD's PPG equipment still works?

There's PPG presets throughout Exit (especially preset #60).
Can't blame Cubase for poor compositions, that's far too simplistic IMHO. People produce the music, not the technology, it's just a tool.

Old Skool Fan

I think Live Miles is the album where TD start to sound distant to me. The sequencer takes over too much of the direction, stiff tempo and unremarkable drum programming. They almost don't sound like they're there. I do actually like Live Miles and Optical Race, but I'm afraid I'm an old school TD fan and for me 87/88 is pretty much the end.

Feel free to cheerfully flame!
