ears ago in the late 80s and early 90s, the HMV store in Oxford street had a large 'New Age' section, which had titles from TD via Kitaro to whale song yodelling by color therapists ...it morphed in the 90s into the dance section with the 'trance' and 'ambient' genres of 'dance music' and disappeared.
when i traversed the somerset isle of avalon in my daze as a 'new age traveller' much of the music we listened to was labelled as new age or chillout, when in reality it was acid driven pharting about with various levels of dronescapes dressed up as ambient washes of somnambulance, as an antidote to the bang bang bang of rave musique
some of the genre is uncannily fantastic though.
