Capturing the essence...?

Post by Raphalge »

Hi Everyone!

I used to be a member on the old TD forum but was locked out one day (?) and couldn't get back in. I've lurked around ever since, trying to keep up to date with EF and co. but since the release rate just keeps on growing that's no easy task!

My constant obsession, being economically challenged, is to cram as much good music on my mp3 player as possible and in the case of TD, that means trying to capture the essence. To do this, I've put in many hours of research and planning (thanks to the progarchives, voices in the net, wikipedia, and you guys) and bought a number of TD compilations to pick out a decent amount of material 1970-2010, limited to 800 minutes (clocks in at 789 minutes, 10 cds were I to burn it, currently just playlists) and put it in chronological order (-ish).

So, why am I telling you this? Truthfully I don't know, except to say constructive feedback is always a good thing. So I'm giving you the complete playlists (divided up into those imaginare cds) and would appreciate any well-meaning feedback I can get, concerning my choice of tracks etc. At worst it's just a sampler and I'll admit from the outset it's lacking references to a lot of soundtrack work, but I hope it's a decent overview, and my dream is, as I said, to capture the essence.

To begin with, the releases I have are:

The Collection (castle) (1 disc)
The Virgin Years, 1974-1978 (3 discs)
Dream Sequence (2 discs)

Did something similar myself when making CDr's for the car. Took ages selecting the tracks and eventually burnt off dozens of CDr's.

i was gonna say something similar, but i didn't know what era to go for specifically.

and there's so much studio stuff that needs attention

ok, even though i don't need to at all, i'm so much of a fanboy i'm gonna devise my own list

Agree. My iPod (#1) is loaded with all em/ambient music. I tend to play the tree or leaves more than the regular TD's music. Especially when I'm driving.

early-mid 70's shows are the best soundtracks to a late night drive.

My "Eau de TD" obsession continues...

There's a purpose now though. There's just so much TD output, and I'm afraid any potential new fans would be put off. I mean if someone hears Raum and tells others to check out TD, and one friend finds Le Parc, another finds Zeit, and still another finds Seven Letters from Tibet, they won't have any common frame of reference. And as for all the various collections and best ofs, they just make matters worse. So I'm suggesting a journey planner, something that can be grasped to get a sense of continuity and even narrative structure, even if it's just a fanciful construction.

So here's my current stab at ten cds worth of material to bring a sense of clarity to anyone who mught otherwise give up trying to get to grips with the vast TD firmament. "Discs" 1-4 are Pink, Virgin and Blue Years, with some attempt at creating flow from track to track. Disc 5 is the Independent Years and Seattle Years, perhaps suggesting a creative dip, but disc 6 begins with Dream mixes and moves into the TDI Years with its reinvigorated dynamism. But then disc 7 is reflective as TD was then a father and son working through the loss of their wife/mother, and it uses the Divine Comedy as its theme. Disc 8 presents the Eastgate years as though held together
by Atomic Seasons releases, while disc 9 is rich with the variety that saw out that era. Finally disc 10 begins with four tracks to mark Edgar's change of cosmic address, and the beginning of the Quantum Years:

Genesis [from The Collection]
Sunrise in the Third System [from Nebulous Dawn]
Fly and Collision of Comas Sola [from Nebulous Dawn]

Thanks again Dzsedzs. I've looked at your website a bit too, although my Hungarian is not up to much I'm afraid 😳😅

Just adjusted my latest tracklist post yet again (Seattle to TDI years) 😅

Also had a sudden urge to attempt a tracklist for a three-cd "Platinum Collection", based heavily on my ten-disc folly. Here's my attempt, if anyone's interested:

Rubycon pt2 (excerpt)
Rubycon 7" side 2
Stratosfear 7” single mix
Monolight single mix
Cloudburst Flight
Kiew Mission
White Eagle
Logos pt1 (b)
Love on a Real Train

Le Parc
Underwater Twilight
Tyger (Jungle Myster Song)
Livemiles (The Albuquerque Concert) (first excerpt)
Mothers of Rain
After the Call
Three Bikes In The Sky
Blue Bridge
Bride In Cold Tears (Motown Monk Mix)
Towards the Evening Star (live)
Timesquare
Russian Soul
Prison And Paradise
Last Train to Osaka

Sleeping Watches Snoring in Silence
Beyond the Cottage and the Lake
Trauma
The Dance Without Dancers
Going West 2009 (live in Japan)
The Silver Boots of Bartlett Green
Madagascar
Burning the Bad Seal
Tangines on and Running (guitar mix)
The Bleeding Angel
Genesis of Precious Thoughts
Identity Proven Matrix
What You Should Know about Endings

All the best everyone!
