Turn Of The Tides

Post by MrCox »

A forum search revealed that we havn't discussed the "Turn Of The Tides" yet. :?

Of all the Seattle Years releases I like this album most, it's full of great tunes and features some fantastic guitar solos as well as fine melodies. My favourites are "Firetongues", a mind blowing composition, and the stormy "Jungle Journey" (what a rhythm guitar!) that I wish would last for another 6 minutes. "Death Of A Nightingale" is a very emotional piece with a fine saxophone part by Linda Spa and the title track may be one of TD's most daring "fun tracks" with its unusual "poppy" drum beats and the (wordless) female vocals. And then there are two more complicated and longer tracks with "Twilight Brigade" and "Galley Slave's Horizon" (the former featuring some eerie Perica guitar parts, the latter more wodless vocal performances). I even love the original cover with its colourful wheel-like images featuring Edgar's "Coachman's Tales" as liner notes. Edgar should cultivate his writing skills (be it his autobiography or more CD notes), the story is highly metaphorical and full of great images that accompany the music very well. :D

The only track I don't care for is "Midwinter Night", this one is a bit too cheesy for my tastes. And the "Pictures At An Exhibition" version is nothing more than an atmospheric intro that could have been left off the album in my opinion. But these minor complaints don't distract too much from this album's quality. I rate this 8 / 10 and I think it's much better than its reputation among some fans seems to suggest. Too bad this quartet line-up (Edgar & Jerome Froese, Linda Spa & Zlatko Perica) didn't last longer.

My copy of this album doesn't feature "Story Of The Brave", but that's no problem as this one's included on "Dream Encores" as well.

I like this album. The nly one which should've been left off is Pictures... I remeber buying this at a time before I had access to the internet and depended on mails From CD services. At the time a lot of their CD's were a tad more expensive than stuff I could buy from a store. It took me a while to like this album but I still dig it out now & again. My two fave tracks are Midwinter Night & Death of a Nightinglale these two seem to belong together and Lindas sax is great.

Hi Mr C. I hope your bearing up ok at the moment

Midwinter Night is my favourite track on TOTT so I think we're approaching it from completely different standpoints. I take your point about cheesy but I in fact like cheese so when TD do a slightly cheesy track it still seems to have an element of inocent charm to it

I recently watched this track on youtube and was surprised to see Edgar wearing what looked like a pair of jeans as we've got so used to seeing him in black

Linda Spa looks quite different now and I hardly recognised her !

Getting back to TOTT I find it a bit patchy and think there is a bit too much guitar work on the album which at times beats the synth into submission

Wish I could be a bit more positive about it - Sorry

The tracks I really like are Firetongues, Galley Slaves Horizon and Twilight Brigade. The title track is very pleasant. Jungle Journey and Midwinter Night are enjoyable.

I don't like much of it. Horrible production. Some parts reminds me of porno music. The drum sounds in particular are very hard, and to make them "subtle" they just turn down the volume, slightly, which has no positive effect.
Only few good tracks. I can accept it only for being a part of TD's development to where they are now. Edgar once said in an interview that the equipment used on the album was already exhausted at the moment, and they should've moved on earlier.
For me, ToB is much better and fresher.

4/10

Thanks, Hyperborea. I'm OK considering the situation.

@ Pertou:
Porno music?

"Tyranny Of Beauty" is no bad album either, but for me TOTT is much better, especially following the disappointing "Rockoon" album. I don't have a problem with the hard drum sounds (although TD's recent approach at soft drumming is indeed better). All in all TD tried to incorporate some rock music elements into their sound in the 90's and on this album it works IMHO. TOB is somehow overproduced at times, too much is going on there at once. The melodies on TOTT are much clearer and therefore more enjoyable.

I know that many fans are disappointed by the Seattle Years productions. But from time to time I really enjoy them, there are many fine compositions. I guess we also could discuss the various mixes TD created of many Seattle Years tracks (such as "Firetongues" on DM 1, "Twilight Brigade" on "TimeSquare" ("Mobocaster") and "Jungle Journey" on "What A Blast"). In these 3 cases I do prefer the original TOTT versions. :)

Firetongues is the only track I like on the whole CD. This one for me was the damp squid in the TD releases, but since theyve achieved so much with other releases it bears into insignifcance !.

From the cover notes, of the TDI version:

7+7=5

Well, your theory is crazy, but's not crazy to be true

Then I must be mad. 7+7=14. The sum of the digits in 14 is 1+4 = 5, which means the crazy theory is true.

I laughed when some forum member of the old forum, suggested that "Turn Of The Tides" was an anagram for "Den of Utter Sh!t.
