I miss a little dirt in the new productions. These are very clean - For my taste.

I recently brought (well it only came the other day) Native Instruments FM8 soft synth, Edgar used several presets from this on Spring and Summer in Nagasaki (and why not! they are excellent and royalty free). If anyone wants me to list the tracks and which presets were used I will gladly.

A few presets from the Korg Wavestation were used on 'Rockoon' and other tracks.

Edgars favourite 'harpsichord' bass sound (used for chords on Nutshell awakening on 'Views from a red train' can be found in the form of the 'six string' preset on the FM7 and FM8 soft synths.

I have nothing against using presets myself in my music, I like to gather as many sounds as I can to make a good atmos...................Custom or preset!! :D
You were only supposed to blow the bladdy doors off!!!!

I think it is a mix of microwave wavetable-sound and fm-synthesizer sound. Edgar was a big PPG fan :-)

I've said much of this before but consider Mozart - all his sounds can be found in the General Midi soundbank. If a manfacturer has invested £Ms in a new product with part of that investment being presets to show the kit off then why not use them?

When I heard Dead Solid Perfect the 1st time I instantly recognised many Lorand D50 sounds as I had it's cousin D20 but I'd never been able to come close to using the exact same sounds with the same effect.

Can you imagine if out of a sense of crative purity all synths were shipped with every tone a flat sine wave? Synths would have died out
imho
