More complex rythm structures nowadays.

Post by Misterdance »

As I listen to the newer albums late 80ties begin 90ties it is clear that Edgar and Jerome use more complex rythm structures with there drum machines or workstations /synths/

As I know of in the early 70ties and late 60ties the drums where for real. Analog, live played. As drum machines and synths got more advanced, the structure of the rythms really got more advanced with TD.

After Optical Race patterns began really an adventure. This is also clear on the newer albums of the 90ties. Really great programming of drum sounds! I like it. Next to the arrangements this patterns make it really outstanding tracks!

MD.

ps: I started out programming my own music late 80ties with an Atari 1040stF and some synths, sound modules, sampler, drummachine etc ..

from 1975 TD were using the earliest Drum Machines from Roland, as well as using the Moog and PE sequencers to trigger rhythmic patterns. It was less common for them to use acoustic drums, although obviously they were used on Ricochet for example

Interesting - at first I thought the patterns could have been just as complex to begin with but then if you're limited to a dozen sounds it's hard not to make a complex pattern sound umm "messy". That won't apply to live dummers as with a few instruments and their skill there are thousands of sounds. So I guess the impovement in number and variablity of sounds offers more scope for complexity that's not "messy".

imho &c
